Antonia Z Brown is a dancer and choreographer based in Philadelphia, whose work has been described as “full-bodied, virtuosic and ‘space-eating’” (Kalila Kingsford Smith for thINKingDANCE). Recent projects include ensemble choreography based on sensory imagery of water flows in the body, dances where crowds of people simply embrace, and a 30 minute solo, performed by Antonia herself, that is a game of telephone between six different choreographers.
Antonia was an Artist in Residence at Mascher Space Coop in Philadelphia from 2013 to 2015, and now serves on the cooperative’s Advisory Board. She has been honored as a 2014/2015 Season Co-Director of the ETC Performance Series, and the 2012 Choreographer in Residence at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance. A graduate from Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges, she now dances modern repertory with DanceFusion Dance Company and in various projects with artists including Meredith Stapleton, Sean Thomas Boyt, Jacobi Alvarez, Leyya Mona Tawil, Katie Horton and Artists and The Institute for Psychogeographic Adventure. In her 2015 SoLowFest project One Dancer, Six Choreographers, Antonia performed work by Philly dance scene, guest artists David Brick, Christina Gesualdi, Nora Gibson, Gina Hoch-Stall and Jumatatu Poe.
Antonia’s work has been supported by and in partnership with Tapestry Dance Company, the Lutton Memorial Fund, Mascher Space Cooperative, the Community Education Center, the Hurford Student Arts Fund and the Philadelphia Cultural Fund.
